This edition of the newsletter sees a face-to-face interview with Federico Ruggieri, Co-ordinator of EUMEDGRID-Support; news on the New Africa Regional Operation Centre!; and a look at upcoming major events such as the EGI Technical Forum 2010 and ICT2010 where the project will play an important role.

The Mediterranean region is of strategic importance to the EU, in both economic (trade, energy, migration) and political (security, stability) terms.” In the economic domain, the area is still standing both fast demographic and labor force expansion, while a slow economic growth is resulting in high unemployment and stagnating incomes.

With the rapid advancement of technology in the world of science calls for a demand for more and more computing power. The implementation and co-ordination of a grid infrastructure at a national (or larger) level opens up important opportunities to optimise the usage of existing, limited storage and computing resources, improve their accessibility and empower research groups from several domains.

There is no need for e-Infrastructures without a user community correspondingly exploiting them. The project has an important responsibility to support existing user’s applications and assist new applications that will run on the Mediterranean e-Infrastructure. This activity is also committed to study and deliver a strategy for the long-term sustainability of the support system that will be put in place during the project lifetime.

The EUMEDGRID-Support Training Programme is provided in synergy with the EPIKH project, EUMEDCONNECT2 and other initiatives to increase the awareness of e-Infrastructures across the region and educate user communities through dedicated training events. Collaboration opportunities are also available to engage the project through channels such the EUMEDGRID-Support Online Community and establishing agreements with Strategic e-Infrastructure Projects and Initiatives.

EUMEDGRID-Support offers the opportunity to become a Strategic Project where activities can be leveraged and experiences gained as well as increasing visibility. A few projects have already been established or are currently developing a work programme.

Africa ROC: The Africa Regional Operation Centre (Africa ROC) has been created as a coordination and support point for all sites in the Continent wanting to participate in the stimulating and challenging endeavour of creating a common Grid infrastructure to foster e-Science.
EPIKH: Europe is heavily investing to create a continental e-Infrastructure based on Grid technology in order to turn the vision of a European Research Area (ERA) into reality.

The promotion of National Grid Initiatives carried out in all non-EGEE Partner Countries registered a good level of success with programmes already operational in Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia and well advanced plans in Jordan and Syria. The national impact and policy level awareness in some of these countries has led to an initial financial support of the initiatives.

A pilot grid infrastructure, composed to date of 25 sites in 13 countries, was set up during the EUMEDGRID duration.
